      Absolutely amazing, Chris and Susan!

Your work is sympathetic, of a high standard and cognisant of Hymer’s design.  But of most importance is your statement “the whole thing can be returned to stock”.  Over the years, I’ve seen so many motorhomes utterly ruined by modifications that are irreparable.

This modification will be of great interest to many SG owners, I suspect.  I’ve never been a fan of “dinettes” – uncomfortable space-wasters but… they do enable seat-belted passenger travel and a large area for eating and children to play at.

I particularly like your single swivel seat which would enable a SK owner to carry an extra seat-belted passenger by merely removing that side’s settee.

Great ideas, great write-up and great illustrations, thanks Chris.  Keep them coming!

And bon voyages for the rest of your travels.

          Hi Paolo and welcome!

If you have a side dinette in your Exsis, you have the ‘SG’ version.  The ‘SK’ is the version with seating either side of a central aisle.

I would have thought that this would be a straightforward improvement, but as I don’t have the dinette model Exsis, I can’t advise.  Maybe one of our dinette-owning members could comment?

The crucial points I think that I would be closely examining would be…

          1)  The dimensions of the “up/down” mechanism.

          2)  The size of the table and its relationship to the seating.

          3)  The weight of the unit and the fixing to the wall.

All things are possible, Paolo, depending upon your competence as a DIYer or the depth of your wallet if you pay someone else to do the job!

Let us know if you carry out this mod as well as telling us how you went about it.  It will be very interesting for others.

          Good luck.

            Well-spotted, Fred!

You might be getting slower, but your eyesight is OK!

Happy New Year to you both, chum.

The P4 is a car that would certainly be high on MY list of cars to add if I had a classic car collection.

I remember the Gas Turbine Rover, that looked a bit like a “convertible P4” – now that WOULD be a good addition to your collection!

As Fred says, I’m certain that, for a variety of reasons, our Exsis’ will be the classics of the future.  Quality, design, manufacturer spares support (washbasins excluded!) and so on are good reasons to hang on to one.

Something else that has occurred to me… The ends of the table support tubes are chamfered so they go into the sockets.  I’m not sure how you’d get on with just a straight cut tube.  Maybe try it, but be prepared for a LOT of work with some emery paper/sander/grinder or let an engineering shop do it for you.

                  Good luck.

Welcome, Rufnus – no apology needed for your perfect translation!

I think you may be referring to the ‘SG’, dinette version of Exsis?  I’m not familiar with how this works, as I have a ‘SK’, but someone will be along soon who is qualified to comment.  I seem to remember someone publishing a mod for this a few years ago, so fingers crossed for you.

If it is the ‘SK’ version, with the two bench seats, I can see no reason why a very short tube supporting the table would not work.  Just be careful that the ends of the table have some extra support – the table socket would be unlikely to bear the stress of someone sitting on the end of the table.

Please let us know how you get on with this mod – very interesting.

                      Great post, thanks, Fred.

Yes, I can confirm how easy it is to replace the double-glazed panes, after a storm ripped one off and clean away – just slot it back in and reconnect the stay!

I can’t help you, Dave, as I’ve not touched my boot handles yet, but I’m sure Fred will be along shortly.

Meanwhile, have you seen Harvey’s Item 68 on page 576 of the Little Exsis Book (with accompanying photos)?  There may be additional information there to help you if you’ve not read it already.

Good luck and let us know how you sort it, please?  Thanks.

Replacements are available from a third party supplier in the UK, Marley – you don’t need to go through Hymer (and add their markup!).

There are two types – the weaker, black plastic standard type and a much, much stronger solid stainless steel type (which are horrendously expensive!).  I replaced the bed board pair with the stainless ones and it’s totally cured the flap opening in the middle of the night!

The code number of this strong metal product by “Southco”, is M1-64 8, and was available from QEF Ltd, Tel 01384.276200, although I’m having trouble finding their website.  They also do the black plastic ones but I don’t have those details – look on their website if you can.  https://tinyurl.com/y74qhxra

The Little Exsis Book has all these details, Item 32, page 385.

Please let us know how you get on, Marley?

                          Good luck!

Do you mean those round black ones that hold the bed base door and luggage compartment lids shut?

                              Result!!

That just goes to show you!  But thanks for posting – this could solve a problem for someone at some time in the future.

If the cable has actually ‘stuck’, maybe remove it and fit a brand new cable, or at the very least, remove it, hang it up and dribble a light oil (3-in-One is good, or even engine oil, but that will take longer to dribble through – NOT “WD40” though!).  Some motorcyclists have “power pumps” to pump oil through cables under force for instant lubrication.

The worry is, if it’s jammed once, when will it do it again, or even break?

Thanks for posting that result, Impractical.

Great idea, Fred, and a good alternative.

Something else I considered, because pulling the cab curtains means the bumper needs to be removed, is to permanently fit a strip of a ‘frayed’ or ‘tasseled” material that hangs down below the rail and draws attention to its presence.  As we so rarely draw the cab curtains, the foam bumper idea was the one I eventually went for.

Place them here on the Forum, Hymerman.  Use the small symbol square (with mountain and sun) to add the pic then choose a suitable title.

We used to have an “album” on the old site, but often pictures in the album and forum explanations became widely separated.  Also, when creating this site, the option to add an “Album” was hugely expensive.

                                  Hope that’s OK?
