Hello Jan and Phil
I sometimes find I’m driving with the anti-skid symbol showing when I’ve not selected the ASR function. If I stop and immediately re-start the engine then it goes out. This has happened since new (May 2004, I’m the first owner). I raise this because you mentioned the anti-skid system. There seems to be nothing wrong with the operation of my anti-skid system, however, because I park off my neighbour’s drive which is steep (1 in 5/1 in 6) and narrow with a sharp bend. I drive off uphill and every time the front wheels scrabble their way round the bend whilst I hold the line. Not much fun but it shows the anti-skid system is working!
My personal experience of ABS faults is that they’re expensive. I’m crossing my fingers I don’t have an ABS problem with my van. I think everybody on the site will be hoping to hear from you how your garage solves your fault.
Erwin and Jean – I’m so sorry about your chassis rust problems. I’ve had 4 bites at this cherry. Each time I asked the garage to tackle everything even before it had reached an advisory phase. In total I’ve spent over £4,000. After the first major job when I got home I went underneath my van to inspect the work. Where they had welded and repaired the chassis visually, and with a light metal hammer tap, it all seemed fine. What was not, and caused me to drive 11 miles straight back to the garage, were 5cm discs of shiny bright metal where when looking for rust they had scraped off the top surface and then not bothered to underseal it when coating their own welding. Am I being cynical when I say that for me this is another form of planned obsolescence? If this is a common trick of the trade then I recommend that we should all look at the underneath repairs on a ramp before we pay and drive away.
With best wishes to all,
Keith.
Hi Fred
I’ve often wondered about fitting rear seats and belts and now you’ve shown it can be done. It’s particularly topical for me at the moment because when visiting us this year my daughter, her husband and two children have been cooking, sleeping, etc in our SK. To provide them with the freedom to drive it off would be fantastic. What did your insurance company say about this modification?
Thank you for this post.
Best wishes to all in these difficult times.
Keith.
Hi Barry
As you know I gave Fred £50 towards the site continuation cost fund. I am very happy to have you donate this sum to the two charities you have chosen. Thank you once again for your enormous contribution through the forum to keeping us all safely and enjoyably on the road.
Best wishes
Keith
Hello Barry and Maggie
Barry you were a marvel. Untiring and helpful (and prompt) with your excellent advice you made the forum a go-to place for the best advice.
A big welcome to you, Chris and Amanda – I hope that you enjoy running the forum and I regard my £50 contribution to the fees as one of the better investments of my life.
My best wishes to you, Barry and Maggie, for your Exsis-less future and to you, Chris and Amanda, for taking on the site.
Keith.
Yes, it was good to hear from you, Fred and Gill, and thank you for your positive response. Your walk sounds idyllic and the sights and sounds of nature must be very relaxing. I doubt if I am the oldest member but I did reach 80 last autumn – I may be the oldest who bought his van new. In 3 weeks I will have been lucky enough to have owned it for 16 years. Zarita and I remain well, thank you.
These are challenging times and I wish that you all remain in good health.
Keith.
Thanks Barry for that very helpful reply to the question I asked and the additional info re the Schaudt charger charging the engine battery when my van is hooked up. I had proof that this was not happening across my first winter and was told by my suppliers’ electrician that being hooked-up only charged the leisure battery. I was hooked-up to power a low wattage fan heater and had noticed that the engine battery seemed more weak than I expected in cold weather and no run out for 2 weeks. (Please remember that I bought my van new and it was the first winter, therefore, for its engine battery.) Unless my van is configured differently from yours I should be able to find a blown fuse. I would be pleased not to have to connect up my CTEK charger – it does a good job (I think) because it keeps the voltage constant at 13v – because it will make it easier to hop in and drive off!
Best wishes,
Keith.
Hi
As I cancelled our diary entry for our first holiday for this year I thought of you, Barry and Maggie, and it occurred to me that present events may mean that your last holiday may become your last (not, I hasten to add, because you may succumb to the coronavirus) because you announced above your intention to sell your van later this year and you may not be allowed/able to fit in another trip before then. If this should be the case then I am sad for you. It is not the way that I would like to end my motorhoming life.
I am writing now because I resolved to write when I read that you will be stopping running the site to say a very big thank you to you for maintaining it and contributing a stream of very helpful advice to all of us. I have solved problems much more easily because of your advice directly to me or indirectly to others. You are not a lone voice helping us on the forum, Fred and Gill and others spring to mind, but, except when holidays have prevented it, you are consistently the first and it is rare for you not to have at least one good idea re someone’s new problem. So, as I said, a very big thank you to you.
With my very best wishes in these times that will try us all,
Keith
