We have just had our first MOT done, since we purchased our motorhome, Hector, in the summer, (sadly not been able to use a lot, due to lockdown, and work needed on it)  It failed and  needed a few things doing, including brake hoses. Additionally it had very large rust holes underneath, that we didn’t know about … on inner sill’s, chassis rail’s and o/S front inner sill corroded. Latter includes a 6” by 6” hole that needs a metal plate welded onto it.

Scarey to think how much this will all cost ….

We know there has been discussion about different longer term treatments, is Lanoguard still considered the best?

Thanks in anticipation of your help.
We’re new to this, but learning rapidly !! 🤔

Sorry to hear that. I’ve not heard of much chassis rust apart from the front chassis cross member which is prone to corrosion. I hope you can get the work done effectively and at reasonable cost.

<p style=”text-align: right;”>I have seen a few Exsis with bad underside corrosion, the chassis design has a few rust traps also I think the grp body and lack of rust on the bodywork gives owners a false sense of security. But your post the rust seems quite advanced, if you patch up a couple of holes, rust will probably appear somewhere else. Find a specialist rustproofing independent, there is a very good one one Johnstone in Scotland maybe a bit far but it’s worth travelling for a recommended outfit. Get the underside stripped up of paint and old underseal, all rust cut back to the metal and welded, then properly painted and rustproofed. The exsis although old is not like a car it is far more valuable so work like this while being uneconimical on a similar age car, is worth it for an exsis, have the work documented and photograph, in case you wish to sell.</p>

Hello Jean,  always sorry to hear about folks problems so I will tell you what I can from memory.

There have been references to rust issues in recent years and I believe thatb there have been contributions over the years from several forum contributors – some of them on previous versions of this Forum so some of that info may not be available  on this site….but I think perhaps recent ones by Dougie K9 and Chris will be, so you will need to do a little research.

Dougie also posted photos I think and that was probably earlier  last year -he had it repaired in Westbury in Wiltshire at a specialist Landrover restorer.

Chris had his repaired before he did his ‘Big Trip’ year out and posted about it at the time, perhaps two years ago. I think that it was done in Lincolnshire ?, maybe Rustbusters?? a well advertised outfit .

Both of the above and perhaps more will be on this forum if you search.

Previously and therefore not searchable will be comments from others, notably probably about 4/5 years ago from Russell (Swansea, not sure if he still has his Exsis)   who I believe was critical of Rustbusters and got them to do a better job, so they will have learned from that as Russell is a very competent metal worker from examples of his work that we have seen (safe under seat and security box under boot) and he is very neat and precise….and would have demanded a proficient rustproofing job from them.

I remember that Maldwyn also described replacement of front crossmember, another well known Ducato issue – and more recently I think a newer member gave references for price and purchase, so that might be on this Forum.

Please check out the ‘Little Exsis Book’, that great contribution from Tom , because without his foresight all of that old information would have been lost. If you look at the most recent revision by Tom you will see additions to previous the information embodied in the book :-

                  item 25  – 11/06/16   – Undersealing

                  67  –  16/06/16   – Undersealing additions

                  122  – 04/08/18   – Undersealing additions

                  131   – 20/08/18   – Front Cross member corrosion

The base vehicle is Fiat Ducato and many motorhomes are built on this, so other Forums ( I believe that you have posted on them ?) may give you more information or repairers in your area. I believe that there is a reputable one in/near Poole ? Rustbeaters/ Rustbusters??

Although you must be disappointed, I suspect it may well come to us all and the words from Mccubbin are valid in there is so much residual value in all the good works of the Exsis over and above the base vehicle that it is built on.

Best wishes for a good solution – your experiences will be a valuable guide to others so please give feedback when it is done.

Stay safe and best wishes for a Happier New Year and travels.

                  Fred

                    Hi Jean

Hopefully you will get Hector sorted and back up and running ready for when they let us out.

When we bought Helga, she had a rust hole which was highlighted in the mot and fortunately fixed by her previous owner.

Once we had her, we took her here : https://www.rust.co.uk

They cleaned, rust proofed and then sealed the chassis. Not cheap, but it looks fantastic, all black and sealed. They guarantee the work as long as you have a yearly check.

I am not affiliated with them at all, but they did a very good job.

                    All the best

                    chris

Huge thanks to everyone for your really helpful advice and ideas, and encouragement,  we’ll weigh it all up, and see what’s affordable 🤔!

We had booked it in with the garage that did the MOT, but wondering now if we should go for something more specialised ….  the garage is owned by a relative of a mobile motorhome mechanic we’ve used a few times, so maybe they’ll have better knowledge than some, and we could show them your advice perhaps.

                      Thanks again,

                      Jean n’Erwin

                        Hi Jean,

My post with photos on this rust problem is listed under ‘general discussion’ topic ‘New owner intro’ dated 25th Feb 2020.

It’s a problem that is going to start cropping up for a few owners due to the age of the Exsis. Hence had mine sorted with rust cut out, re-fabricated and protected for the future – expensive but worth it in the long run! Had mine done at a Landrover specialist. My thought was that if they can effectively protect a Landrover’s underside then that’s got to be a good endorsement as they have a lot of farming and off road vehicles going through the same process.

The only alternative is to have the rust dealt with as and when it’s identified during an MOT or service.

Good luck with it and hope it gets sorted.

                        Regards, Dougie

Hello Fred & Gill and Everyone,

Yes we still have our Exsis.

We did have rather an outing having our under sealing done, but that was with Mr Chris Parkinson of Before & After, not Rustbusters, who after a six months of hassle, redid the whole process and paid us £50 compensation.

I would recommend having the underside cleaned and checked, and any repairs carried out. All the cross members will require having holes drill in them for the insides to be treated, the main members inside the wheel arch will have large rubber bungs which need to be refitting after being treated, and if you can, check the whole underside of it before it comes off the ramp.

                          Hope this helps.

                          Fina & Russell.
